|'''5TONIC''' is an open research and innovation ecosystem for industry and academia to evaluate and demonstrate the capabilities and interoperation of experimental and pre-commercial 5G equipment, services and applications. It is currently structured in two main areas: the 5G Virtual Software Network Area, and the 5G Wireless Systems Area. | |||
The 5G Virtual Software Network Area allows the development and advanced experimentation on Network Function Virtualization (NFV), Software Defined Networking (SDN), security services, network control and management planes, cloud services, signalling and related areas. The 5G Wireless Systems Area focuses on the air interface, radio aspects, duplexing, multiplexing, media access control, spectrum, interference, mobility tracking, all based on a Multi-Radio Access Technology (multi-RAT) approach.
'''ETSI OSM''' is the orchestrator used for all experiments run in 5TONIC. The diverse nature of these experiments and the direct interaction with network users in many different vertical sectors are allowing us to validate features and identify requirements for the evolution of '''OpenSourceMANO'''

|'''IoT-NGIN''' introduces novel research and innovation concepts, acting as the “IoT Engine” which will fuel the Next Generation of IoT as a part of the European Next Generation Internet. IoT-NGIN uncovers a pattern-based meta-architecture that encompasses evolving, legacy, and future IoT architectures. The project also optimizes '''IoT/M2M''' and '''5G/MCM''' communications, including using secure-by-design micro-services to extend the edge cloud paradigm. Moreover, it enables user and self-aware, autonomous IoT systems through privacy-preserving federated ML and ambient intelligence, with AR support for humans. Distributed IoT cybersecurity and privacy, for example, using Self-Sovereign Identities and interconnected DLTs to implement Meta-Level Digital Twins, are also among the main priorities of IoT-NGIN. The developed 5G Resource Management API in IoT-NGIN utilizes '''ETSI OSM''' as the NFV MANO for the orchestration of container-based network services to be deployed in the edge. The developed API will also enable the service migration for IoT devices so that they can run their processes as container-based network services in the 5G edge cloud. | |||

|The '''NETEDGE''' project is a Portuguese consortium that proposes developing an edge computing solution for fixed networks. Partners wish to pursue the development of an evolved '''Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC)''' system that can be explored and replicated, creating sales, new business models, and opportunities for all participants. The research tasks include contributions beyond the state-of-the-art regarding security guarantees and the orchestration of the network of MEC Platforms. The prototype system will be tested in a relevant environment, facilitated by the participation of two industries that offer use cases to implement the technology. | |||
The pursued business model was the Business to Business to Consumer (B2B2C) because dstelecom is a connectivity wholesaler, thus having operators as its clients. Since MEC, according to the ETSI references, mainly contemplates the typical Business to Consumer (B2C) model, one of this project's main contributions was precisely adapting the original ETSI MEC architecture to such a scenario. Furthermore, this project was also concerned with the security problems of this computing paradigm. From this preoccupation, Moving Target Defense (MTD) and Zero Trust (ZT) were applied within the Edge Computing ecosystem to enhance its protection.
Ultimately, all the created proofs of concept used '''ETSI OSM''' as the NFV-MANO, used to manage and orchestrate the overall MEC environment.

===ONOFRE-3=== | |||

||[[File:Space.png|20px]] | |||
|The '''ONOFRE-3''' project deals with a 5G/6G ecosystem featured by the heterogeneity of the edge, fog, and cloud processing layers for proper management of dynamic QoS application requirements running on mobile nodes. To overcome this complexity, AI and Machine Learning techniques for contextual information prediction and network management are proposed. AI/ML can also support both offline planning methods and multiaccess coordination and control and be deployed at end devices. In this scenario, security is also mandatory from the start, hence, advanced cloud data privacy and security techniques are proposed to be smoothly managed and controlled across different cloud computing domains. Finally, practical evaluation of these mechanisms needs a realistic application scenario with clear requirements. In this line, CCAM and C-ITS verticals are taken for reference evaluation, which provide clearly defined and demanding QoS requirements and serve as reference area to analyse and develop concrete and meaningful benchmarks in a massive latency-bounded slice. ONOFRE-3 studies and tests novel mechanisms at all the involved stages: offline network planning, online provisioning and management, multiple radio access and end devices. We propose to use intelligent orchestration of cloud, fog, and edge computing for CCAM and C-ITS, over a secured framework and supported by AI/ML techniques. The project outcomes are expected to have a significant economic and social impact. Cloud and edge computing advances brought by the project will contribute to the fields that will also drive the future ICT economy. Project results will also directly contribute to improve the Key Enabling Technologies identified for CCAM and should help accelerate its adoption. | |||

|The '''Smart5Grid''' project will develop network applications tailored to the requirements of existing real operational issues faced by the modern smart energy grids, and thereby it will heavily contribute to the energy vertical ecosystem. NetApps will be consisted of appropriately chained VNFs that will be developed on the Smart5Grid platform and tested and validated on real power grid infrastructures and under true operational conditions. | |||
Then, the successful and wide adoption of the Smart5Grid NetApps will allow the smooth penetration of MNOs, telecoms, ICT industries and SMEs into the energy sector for provisioning novel network services, but also, it will offer automation and real-time inspection and control to the existing energy stakeholders. The real-life validation of the Smart5Grid NetApps has been planned to take place in four countries: Italy, Spain, Greece and Bulgaria and the demonstrated scenario and setup for each use case is described in the subpages.
Smart5Grid uses Open Source Mano (OSM) to orchestrate the NetApp, i.e. OSM deploys the Network Services (NS) with their respective CNFs that are part of the NetApp when the NetApp Controller instructs OSM to do so.

|'''Vertical Innovations in Transport And Logistics over 5G experimentation facilities (VITAL-5G)''' | |||
The pan-European Transport & Logistics (T&L) eco-system is one of the most promising adopters of 5G. VITAL-5G is developing an intuitive and production-ready orchestration framework for provisioning and experimental validation of T&L services, providing an open repository of T&L NetApps to speed up the creation of new services in this sector. The availability of flexible and intuitive tools and APIs for design, management and orchestration of T&L NetApps will facilitate the transfer of 5G-empowered services from trials/pilot stages to production, overcoming the limitations that exist today for industry verticals operating T&L virtualised services in a 5G network.
VITAL-5G is developing a flexible platform to serve the specific needs of the T&L sector focused on the design, creation, deployment and management of NetApps and their validation in real-life conditions and customizable 5G infrastructures. The project targets three main use cases with trials planned in three T&L experimentation areas featuring 5G connectivity and edge/cloud infrastructures at the Port of Antwerp, Port of Galati on Danube River, and in a logistics hub in Athens. Beyond the industry leaders and SMEs in the VITAL-5G consortium, the project will involve third-party experimenters to expand the initial offer to a larger set of close-to-market NetApps scenarios and provide a wider baseline for the T&L NetApps business ecosystem.
All VITAL-5G testbeds adopt '''ETSI OSM''' as NFV Orchestrator for the provisioning and management of network services composed of NetApps, which are modelled as enhanced VNFs, VM-based or container-based, with specific requirements in terms of 5G mobile connectivity. VITAL-5G testbeds integrate edge and cloud nodes managed via OpenStack or Kubernetes, deploying OSM at the NFVO level. The VITAL-5G open online repository offers a centralized catalogue of NetApp packages, for vertical-agnostic and vertical-specific NetApps, which is automatically synchronized with the OSM catalogues in the three testbeds. Service providers and application developers from third parties can use the VITAL-5G portal to onboard additional NetApps or T&L services, composing the software assets available in the catalogue. The platform mediates the interaction with the various testbeds and OSM instances, offering an extensive set of vertical-oriented tools and features to design and build new T&L services, orchestrate their provisioning and validate their performance over configurable 5G infrastructures and network slices. The adoption of OSM simplifies the interoperability with the various edge and cloud platforms and unifies the NetApps onboarding procedure over the three testbeds, facilitating their provisioning and their interconnection with specialized network slices and IoT/T&L devices. OSM features for monitoring and VNF configuration are integrated in the VITAL-5G experiment management procedures, for automated execution of testing actions, as well as collection and analysis of application, infrastructure and network KPIs during the T&L service trials.

5GinFIRE
5GinFIRE is a three-year project under the EU programme Horizon 2020, which started on January 2017. The project aspires to establish a NFV-enabled experimental testbed for 5G technologies, capable of instantiating and supporting vertical industries based on industry-leading and open source technologies. The core testbed is distributed across different locations, including Spain, Portugal, UK and Greece, and other facilities across Europe will be integrated. In 5GinFIRE, ETSI OSM plays a significant role, being chosen as the open source solution to provide the management and orchestration functionalities for the NV experimentation platform. Being framed under the EU FIRE initiative, half of the project budget is dedicated to third parties (experimenters and 5G experimental facilities owners/operators), which will be selected through the planned 5GINFIRE Open Calls.
5GinFIRE is currently contributing to OpenSourceMANO in several directions:

5G-TRANSFORMER
5G-TRANSFORMER is a 5G PPP Phase2 project that addresses the transformation of today’s rigid mobile transport networks into an SDN/NFV-based 5G Mobile Transport and Computing Platform (MTP) supporting the specific needs of vertical industries. Current considered verticals in 5G-TRANSFORMER are: automotive, eHealth, media & entertainment, cloud robotics and mobile virtual network operators (MVNO). In order to do so, 5G-TRANSFORMER proposes a novel architecture aligned with ETSI NFV Interface and Information Model Specifications (IFA) that defines four main building blocks: the Vertical Slicer (5GT-VS) as the vertical front-end and the common entry point for all verticals, the Service Orchestrator (5GT-SO) as the E2E service orchestration platform, the Mobile Transport and Computing Platform (5GT-MTP) as the underlying unified transport stratum for integrated fronthaul and backhaul networks, and the Monitoring platform (5GT-MON) in charge of service and performance monitoring. Our key technical solutions are (1) Network Slicing to enable the provisioning and managing slices tailored to the needs of different verticals; and (2) the aggregation and federation of transport networking and computing fabric, from the edge all the way to the core and cloud using efficient contextual Virtual Network Function placement algorithms for dynamic deployment of multi-site network services while satisfying the specific demanding requirements of vertical industries.

Containernet
Containernet is a fork of the famous Mininet network emulator and allows to use Docker containers as hosts in emulated network topologies. This enables interesting functionalities to build networking/cloud emulators and testbeds. One example for this is the NFV multi-PoP infrastructure emulator "vim-emu" which was created by the SONATA-NFV project and is now part of the OpenSource MANO (ETSI OSM) project. Besides this, Containernet is actively used by the research community, focusing on experiments in the field of cloud computing, fog computing, network function virtualization (NFV), and mobile edge computing (MEC). |

PALANTIR
PALANTIR aims to provide multi-layered, infrastructure-wide threat monitoring, risk assessment, cyber-resiliency (both at security and integrity levels) and knowledge sharing in a heterogeneous ecosystem. To this end, different Machine Learning (ML) models are applied to detect threats based on different sources from the infrastructure; and adequate Security-as-a-Service (SecaaS) are orchestrated based in the Network Functions Virtualisation (NFV) architecture whenever a threat is detected or whenever there is an integrity breach of the systems, reported by the Trusted Computing (TC) techniques. ETSI OSM Release TEN is used in PALANTIR by interacting with its NBI to handle the packages onboarded, manage the lifecycle management of Cloud-Native Functions (CNFs) deployed in bare-metal multi-k8s cluster and configured by day2-actions, as well as reusing some of the data collected by OSM from the internal constructs on the infrastructure (at VNF and VIM level) and data parsed from the packages.

PLEDGER
The PLEDGER project aims at delivering a new architectural paradigm and a toolset that will pave the way for next generation edge computing infrastructures, tackling the modern challenges faced today and coupling the benefits of low latencies on the edge, with the robustness and resilience of cloud infrastructures. The project will deliver a set of tools and processes that will enable a) edge computing providers to enhance the stability and performance effectiveness of their edge infrastructures, through modelling the overheads and optimal groupings of concurrently running services, runtime analysis and adaptation, thus gaining a competitive advantage b) edge computing adopters to understand the computational nature of their applications, investigate abstracted and understandable QoS metrics, facilitate trust and smart contracting over their infrastructures and identify how they can balance their cost and performance to optimize their competitiveness and monitor their SLAs. By providing this toolset, the project will allow also third parties to act as independent validators of QoS features in IoT applications, enabling new decentralized applications and business models, thus filling a large gap in the emerging edge/IoT computing market landscape.
PLEDGER selected ETSI OSM as the NFV orchestrator for service creation and instantiation in scenarios with network slicing requirements. OSM instantiate NS on top of network slices previously provisioned by the PLEDGER platform.
