Overview
ETSI's Centre for Testing and Interoperability and the OSM community are organizing the first Fully Remote OSM Hackfest from 9th to 12th March 2020.
The event will be run in parallel with the OSM-MR#8 meeting, which will also be run remotely.
Participation to OSM Hackfests is free and open to all upon Registration
Scope
This OSM Hackfest will allow new users to get familiar with OSM Release SEVEN and exercise all the new functionalities, such as:
- OSM deployment on Kubernetes and self-monitoring of OSM Modules
- End-to-end Orchestration and life cycle management of real Network Services
- packaging, on-boarding,
- day-0/day-1/day-2 configuration
- service assurance: monitoring and closed-loop operation
- Running Cloud-Native Network Services
- modeling different types of Network Functions: Virtual, Physical, Cloud-native and Hybrid
- deploying and orchestrating a cloud-native network service wit helm charts
- deploying and orchestrating a cloud-native network service with Juju bundles,
- Automated placement of Network Services for optimized edge deployments
In addition, experienced users and developers will have the opportunity to hack into OSM, build complex examples, fine-tune, test and demonstrate Release EIGHT or experimental features on the OSM Remote Labs network.
Who should attend
- VNF vendors, who want to onboard their VNF in OSM following best practices
- System Integrators, who want to develop their expertise with OSM
- Service providers, who want to get first hand operational experience with OSM
- Academia and Universities, who are using or considering OSM as platform for their research activities in networking
- Experimented developers and users that want to share and test with the community
Prerequisites
- Registration is mandatory!
- Participants are expected to have user-level knowledge of Linux and be familiar with NFV and SDN concepts
- You will need your laptop, and a good internet connexion.
- A remote environment will be made available though VPN for participants to run the hands-on sessions
- if you prefer to install OSM in your own laptop and orchestrate your own cloud, please follow the OSM Quick Start Guide

Ecosystem Day
Thursday 9 am - 1 pm
- [Presentation 30'] Introducing Telefónica's Virtualization Program: UNICA NEXT
- Presenter: Antonio Elizondo, Head of Design Assurance, Telco Cloud Architecture, gCTIO Unit, Telefonica
- Abstract: UNICA is the Network Virtualization program of Telefónica. Launched on 2014, during 2019 it had been already deployed in all the footprint of Telefónica. UNICA NEXT is the next generation of this program, incorporating the latest virtualization technologies into an industrialized plan, where OSM plays a significant role.
- [Presentation 30'] Deploying OSM in production
- Presenter: Francisco Rodríguez, Indra
- Abstract Required Infrastructure blueprint. Integration into the Operator Systems. User authentication: LDAP and SSO. Instrumentation: Metrics, alarms and logs. Operation and Support services.
- [Presentation 30'] Building a community to reduce VNF integration costs
- Presenters: Tytus Kurek, Arno Van Huyssteen, Canonical
- Abstract: Community-driven portfolio of open source CNFs and VNFs. Partnerships with SIs to help them onboard workloads more reliably and efficiently. Kubernetes operator pattern for software operations, Python Operator Framework. Simplifying upstream OSM production operations.
- [Demo 30'] Easily Setting up 4G/5G Testbeds with OpenAirInterface using OSM
- Presenter: Thomas Dreibholz, Chief Research Engineer, Simula Metropolitan Centre for Digital Engineering
- Abstract: Setting up 4G/5G testbeds can be a highly complicated and error-prone task. In this presentation, we introduce our Open Source VNF and tool-chain for an OpenAirInterface-based EPC to be deployed with the OSM framework. Using our VNF and tool-chain as basis, it will be easily possible to create own testbeds, customise them and extend them with further functionalities.
- [BREAK 30'] ☕
- [Presentation 30'] Tata Elxsi TEOSM Orchestrator, to enable fully virtualized 5G deployments
- Presenter: Venkat Pavan Dasari, Tata Elxi
- Abstract: - Introduction to TEOSM (Tata Elxsi's OSM distribution). Tata Elxsi vision for OSM. Way forward
- [Demo 30'] Automatic Placement of VNFs
- Presenter Lars-Göran Magnusson, Arctos Labs
- Abstract: With wider adoption of NFV and SDN technologies and evolving towards Edge computing, we anticipate the number of locations offering ability to deploy workloads to grow. Those scenarios introduce a need to optimize how individual VNFs / CNFs of NSDs are placed across available infrastructure. The placement feature introduced in release 7.1 supports computation of optimal placement of VNFs / CNFs over VIMs, by matching NS specific requirements (such as VLD Latency constraints) to infrastructure availability and metrics. The placement feature will find the most cost optimal distribution of the NS taking both compute and transport costs into account. The session will demonstrate how OSM's new feature for placement optimization can be utilized, combining a mix of VNF pinning to VIMs, and automatic placement.
- [Presentation & Demo 30'] WhiteNFV Castelldefels, and deploying CNFs with Helm in Kubernetes
- Presenter: José Miguel Guzmán, Whitestack
- Abstract: In this session we will present our approach for getting OSM into production environments, deploying it on top of standardized infrastructure layers: Vanilla Openstack and Vanilla Kubernetes. In addition, we will review how to deploy advanced network services, by combining VNFs (in Openstack) and CNF (with Helm and Kubernetes)
