With advent of 5G and associated use-cases like autonomous-vehicles, immersive-gaming, tele-surgery, drone-surveillance etc. mobile-network traffic is growing rapidly, and human-driven networks are simply not possible. Automation has become a strategic priority for all network operators, enabling them to streamline operations and accelerate profitable service delivery. A relatively recent branch of automation to have entered the frame is closed-loop automation. Closed-loop automation continuously assesses real-time network conditions, traffic demands, and resource availability to determine the best placement of traffic for optimal service quality and resource utilization, according to operator-defined policies. In the presentation I will demonstrate how with OSM we can perform monitoring, alerting, auto scaling and closed loop automation of network service. The automation reduces the need for manual intervention in key operational processes and makes the network truly self-driving. | |||

Overview
ETSI's Centre for Testing and Interoperability and the OSM community are organizing a new OSM Hackfest on 1-4 June 2020. The event will be run remotely, allowing participants to join the hands-on sessions from home.
Participation to OSM Hackfests is free and open to all upon Registration
Scope
This OSM#9 Hackfest will guide participants through the step by step on-boarding, deployment and end-to-end testing of an hybrid Network Service: a Magma EPC with VNF, CNF and PNF components. Participants will be able to get familiar and experiment by themselves with latest OSM features such as:
- VNF Package Management
- Automating Day 1 & 2 operations with OSM Primitives
- Orchestrating VNFs, CNFs and PNFs

OSM Ecosystem Day
Thursday June 4th Afternoon (2:30pm - 6:00pm CET)
- Welcome to the OSM#9 Ecosystem Day by Mona Hrapkowicz, OSM MARCOM Lead (5')
The OSM Ecosystem Day allows organizations in the OSM Ecosystem to share how they are using OSM and how it is helping them to achieve their goals. Presentations and demos cover a wide range of aspects from research activities in academia to production deployments and commercial initiatives, many of them focused in 5G use cases.
- Opening Keynote: BT's journey to Automation by Peter Willis, BT (25')
BT has deployed an NFV Infrastructure in the UK, using Canonical OpenStack and Juniper Contrail, which will run BT's 5G services intially but grow to support a multitude of BT's network services. This platform will be the foundation for BT's strategic automation initiatives meanwhile BT has many tactical network automation initiatives, many using open source components, plus several Orchestration initiatives, that need to be brought together in concert.
- Demonstrating zero-touch discovery and assurance activation with OSM by Andrew Baldock and Ali Belhocine, MYCOM OSI (25')
MYCOM OSI, will demonstrate how its Experience Assurance & Analytics™ (EAA) PrOptima™ Performance Management can, in real-time and with no manual intervention, detect and monitor newly launched VNFs, the service topologies they form part of and the underlying infrastructure that they run on. It enables service assurance, a critical capability that may previously have required weeks or months of preparation, to be activated in seconds.
- TEOSM to drive next generation 5G, IOT and network transformation journey by B. Ramesh Ramanathan, TATA ELXSI (25')
In this presentation we will look into a couple of things - our distribution TEOSM and fabulous new developments in the open source community. With regard to our carrier grade resilient distribution TEOSM, we will look into the latest release Erai 4.0 and the exciting array of features we bring in to enable the success of Operator's transformational journey. From an open source perspective we will look into NG-UI, the next generation digital experience contributed by Tata Elxsi to the community. We will close this presentation with an exciting announcement for universities and research labs.
☕ (30’)
- Community driven production readiness with OSM by Mark Shuttleworth, Canonical (25')
OSM has long ceased to be a subject of research papers only as we see more and more telecommunications service providers preparing to use it in production. During this session we will present the steps that Canonical is taking to evolve OSM towards a production-ready solution. Those include numerous features to ensure high availability on each layer, updates to the upstream installer and documentation improvements.
- Delivering Closed-loop Operations, Auto-scaling and Alerting by Subhankar Pal, Altran (25')
- Towards an Orchestrated 5G Open Core for Telco NFV by Amar Padmanabhan, Facebook, and Gianpietro Lavado / José Miguel Guzmán, Whitestack (25')
Magma is an open-source software platform that gives network operators an open, flexible and extendable mobile core network solution. This session will cover the current status and roadmap of the Magma project, which has been the main topic of this week's OSM Hackfest, as well as highlighting some of the efforts being done to integrate this project as a Telco-grade VNF in existing mobile operators, leveraging the NFV orchestration capabilities of Open Source MANO.
