Overview
ETSI's Centre for Testing and Interoperability and the OSM community are organizing the 7th OSM Hackfest on 9-13 September 2019.
The event will be hosted by University of Patras in Patras, Greece), co-located with the OSM Mid-Release#7 meeting, offering a great opportunity to share and learn with OSM developers and module leaders, and explore opportunities for synergies and collaboration.
Participation to OSM Hackfests is free and open to all upon Registration
Venue
Conference and Cultural Centre of the University of Patras
University Campus,
265 04 Patras
Greece
- Hotel Recommendations and Directions
- Download Visitor Visa Invitation Letter (To be sent for signature to Spyros Denazis <sdena_at_upatras.gr>)
Scope
This OSM Hackfest will allow new users to get familiar with OSM Release SIX and exercise all the main functionalities, from basic operations (installation, setup, common operations, etc.) to most advanced capabilities, such as 5G network slicing with a big focus on VNF on-boarding activities covering Day 0/1/2 operations.
In addition, experienced users and developers will have the opportunity to hack into OSM, build complex examples, fine-tune, test and demonstrate Release SEVEN and experimental features on the OSM Remote Labs network.
Objectives
OSM Hackfest participants will learn to :
- Install OSM and run some examples
- Get familiar with OSM's GUI and CLI
- Create basic VNF and NS Descriptors and build own packages
- Model and deploy Advanced Network Services with:
- Multi-VDU VNFs
- Physical and Hybrid Network Functions
- EPA capabilities
- Model dynamic Life Cycle Management operations with Day-1 and Day-2 actions
- Configure Fault and Performance Management and close-loop operations
- Collecting, visualizing and reacting to metrics and events
- Model and Deploy 5G Network Slices
- Configure and Deploy Service Function Chaining
- Contribute, modify and experiment with OSM source code
- Perform basic troubleshooting
- Understand OSM CI/CD and Robot Framework
- Build complex examples and run own experimental testing
Who should attend
- VNF vendors, who want to onboard their VNF in OSM following best practices
- System Integrators, who want to get started with OSM
- Service providers, who want to get first hand operational experience with OSM
- Academia and Universities, who are using or considering OSM as platform for their research activities in networking
- Experimented developers and users that want to share and test with the community
Prerequisites
- Seats are limited, registration is mandatory
- Participants are expected to have user-level knowledge of Linux and be familiar with NFV and SDN concepts
- Laptop / VM in laptop
- Linux installed (preferred, Ubuntu 16.04)
- RECOMMENDED: 2 CPUs, 8 GB RAM, 20GB disk
- It is highly recommended that you download and install OSM Rel SIX before the hackfest.

OSM & 5G Verticals
Wednesday afternoon is dedicated to projects and initiatives leveraging OSM to accelerate the development, standardization, testing and / or deployment of 5G services for different verticals: Automotive, Smart Cities, Smart Manufacturing, Media, ...
- Welcome Keynote
- Christos Tranoris (University of Patras)
- 5G Verticals Keynote
- Juan Rodriguez Martinez (Telefonica)
- Network operators are continuously searching for improved service deployment capabilities. Such a search, nowadays, implies the frequent evaluation of new techniques for automation and optimization, with the hope that they result in future operational advantages. NFV has greatly impacted the telco industry in the past few years, in many ways. One of the most important is the concept of Orchestration, to which NFV is very tightly coupled, and which can precisely provide new levels of automation and optimization. It is not strange, therefore, that many operators are very interested in MANO implementations like OSM. A totally different question is what OSM can offer to other stakeholders, like the Verticals. The possibilities for new services that Edge Computing will bring has been tagged by many as “unlimited”, and the interest should even grow further thanks to 5G. Therefore, the poll is open: how can OSM accelerate 5G Vertical Services?
- 5G Verticals Session 1 - Test Platforms
- By Benoit Orihuela (ECM), Eleni Fotopoulou and Anastasios Zafeiropoulos (Ubitech)
- The EU-funded 5Gtango project has developed a bunch of useful and powerful tools aiming at speed up the development and improve the quality of 5G-enabled services. These tools range from an handy SDK to a Verification and Validation (VnV) platform and an analytics engine. In this talk, we will have an overview of their features and status through the use-case of a VNF developed in the context of the 5GinFIRE project and deployed in OSM.
- 5G Verticals Session 2 - MEDIA & Virtual Reality
- By: Piotr Zuraniewski (TNO)
- Advanced media applications such as social extended reality (XR) or live ultra high quality video transfer on one hand create opportunity for completely new user’s experience, on the other hand pose a serious challenge to the infrastructure due to their very high and tight resource requirements. In this talk, we will present TNO vision and ongoing project related to the developments, deployment and testing of the modern media services on top of the 5G networks and orchestrated cloud. We will see how softwarized infrastructure can be exploited to create <app-aware> slice which can adapt itself to assure best Quality of Experience for the user.
- 5G Verticals Session 3 - Automotive
- Miguel Luis (IT Aveiro)
- 5G vehicular networks provide the possibility to connect cars, people, traffic signs, road sensors and many others, to create smart environments enabling safety services, assisted and autonomous driving, and also to provide Internet access to users inside those vehicles, among others. To cope with such an extensive list of applications and services, the shared use of resources, allowing the dynamic provision of network and service functions, is foreseen as one of the key enablers for such stringent demands.
