ETSI's Centre for Testing and Interoperability and the OSM community are organizing the 5th OSM Hackfest on 4-8 February 2019.

The event will be hosted by CTTC in Castelldefels (Barcelona), co-located with the OSM Mid-Release SIX meeting and a SonataNFV Hackfest, offering a great opportunity to share and learn with OSM developers and module leaders, and explore further opportunities for synergy and collaboration with 5G research activities. A full track will be dedicated to research activities in the OSM Ecosystem.

Participation to OSM Hackfests is free and open to all upon registration

Scope

This OSM Hackfest will allow new users to get familiar with OSM Release FIVE and exercise all the main functionalities, from basic operations (installation, setup, common operations, etc.) to most advanced activities, such as 5G network slicing and end-to end service orchestration, with a big focus on VNF on-boarding activities covering Day 0/1/2 operations.

In addition, experienced users and developers will have the opportunity to hack into OSM, build complex examples, fine-tune, test and demonstrate experimental features on the OSM Remote Labs network.

Objectives

OSM Hackfest participants will learn to

  • Install OSM and run some examples
  • Get familiar with OSM's GUI and CLI
  • Create own VNF and NS descriptors and build packages
  • Model and deploy NS/VNF with EPA capabilities
  • Model dynamic Life Cycle Management operations with Day-1 and Day-2 actions
  • Model 5G Network Slices and complex NS with PNFs
  • Perform basic troubleshooting
  • Configure Fault and Performance management and close-loop operations
  • Modify and experiment with OSM source code
  • Build complex examples and run own experimental testing

Who should attend

  • VNF vendors, who want to onboard their VNF in OSM following best practices
  • System Integrators, who want to get used with OSM
  • Service providers, who want to get first hand operational experience with OSM
  • Academia and Universities, who are using or considering OSM as platform for their research activities in networking

Prerequisites

  • Seats are limited, registration is mandatory
  • Participants are expected to have user-level knowledge of Linux and be familiar with NFV and SDN concepts
  • Laptop / VM in laptop
    • Linux installed (preferred, Ubuntu 16.04)
    • RECOMMENDED: 2 CPUs, 8 GB RAM, 20GB disk
  • It is highly recommended that you download and install OSM Rel FIVE before the hackfest.

5G Day: OSM & 5G Research

Kick-off Keynote, Vanessa Little (OSM TSC Chair, VMware)

5G Session 1 - OSM in METRO-HAUL, Abubakar Muqaddas (University of Bristol)

Apart from designing the cost-effective, energy-efficient, agile and programmable metro networks and optical infrastructure, Metro-Haul focusses on the integration of disaggregated optical networks, managed by varied SDN solutions at each domain using the standardized APIs and technologies like NetConf and YANG models. Moreover, to allow OSM to run network services over the underlying network and distributed datacentres, the project has created a WIM solution in OSM-5. This has led to the development of T-API based connectors for OSM using standard APIs for better integration of virtualized services with the optical networks.

5G Session 2 - OSM in MATILDA, Fernando Diaz (Atos)

Matilda aims to implement a novel 5G end-to-end services operational framework tackling the overall lifecycle of design, development and orchestration of 5G-ready applications over programmable infrastructure. For this purpose, Matilda highlights two distinctive administrative zones involved in the creation of 5G-ready applications, the Vertical Application Orchestrator, where the user composes the application graph and the Telco provider, where slices are built allocating the network and computational resources in an ETSI compliant way using OSM.

5G Session 3 - OSM in 5GTANGO, Ricard Vilalta (CTTC)

5GTANGO is a 5GPPP Phase2 Innovation Action that enables the flexible programmability of 5G networks. This presentation will cover the basic devops model introduced by SONATA NFV platform, which includes SDK, Validation and Verification and Service Platforms. This research has lead to several contributions to OSM from 5GTANGO and SONATA community. In this presentation these contributions will be detailed, including: vim-emulator, packaging and network slicing.

5G Session 4 - OSM in 5GCity, Hamzeh Khalili (i2CAT)

5GCity will demonstrate, in operational conditions, a distributed cloud and radio platform for municipalities and infrastructure owners acting as 5G neutral hosts. The platform enables to turn a city-infrastructure into a distributed and multi-tenant edge infrastructure by relying on the 5GCity orchestration platform, based on OSM, to manage and orchestrate (NFV + MEC) end-to-end services and creating programmable and on demand network slices.

5G Session 5 - OSM in 5G-MEDIA, Giacomo Bernini (Nextworks)

5G-MEDIA builds a programmable Service Virtualization Platform for design, development and operations of media applications in 5G networks. OSM is the core NFV technology in the 5G-MEDIA platform and enables an automated lifecycle management of media services in heterogeneous NFV infrastructures, opening up new NFV commercial opportunities in the media market segment.

5G Session 6 - OSM in 5G-TRANSFORMER, Josep Mangues(CTTC)

5G-TRANSFORMER addresses the transformation of today’s rigid mobile transport networks into an SDN/NFV-based 5G Mobile Transport and Computing Platform (MTP) supporting the specific needs of vertical industries. Key technical components are (1) Network Slicing, and (2) the aggregation and federation of transport networking and computing fabric for dynamic deployment of multi-site network services. 5G- TRANSFORMER uses OSM as one of its MANO platforms inside the 5GT-Service Orchestrator to allow service providers to manage the life-cycle of 5G network services over a distributed and multi-tenant cloud infrastructure.
