Introduction of Virtual energy-aware states into NS and VNF descriptors

Description

This proposal aims to introduce virtual energy-aware states, a concept defined in ES 203 682, into the Open Source MANO (OSM) platform. These states represent different operational modes a Network Service (NS) can transition into, each with a specific resource configuration aligned with the NS’s energy consumption objectives.

To support this functionality, the VNF and NS Information Models are extended with the fields described in ES 203 682 Section 6, primarily focused on CPU-related configurations such as clock speed and power states. In addition, the NBI NS instantiation and update endpoints are extended with the fields defined in Sections 7.1.1.1 and 7.1.1.3. Through these extensions, OSM will support the definition of virtual energy-aware states and provide the interfaces necessary to transition NSs between states according to their desired power consumption levels

This feature is proposed within the scope of the EXIGENCE project, which aims to reduce the energy consumption and carbon footprint of ICT systems, particularly in the context of next-generation mobile networks.

Definition of Done

The implementation of this feature will be considered complete when:

  • The NS and VNF descriptor schema elements within the Information Model are updated to support virtual energy-aware states.
  • The NBI endpoints are extended to support the definition of virtual energy-aware states by including the new fields in the payload schema.
  • A demo demonstrating potential use cases of this feature is presented in a TECH call.
